Johan Erikson

Executive Director

Johan got an early start with time in the mountains and with a fascination at how things work. This developed into passions for the outdoors and for science, which merged with degrees in geology (A.B. Dartmouth, M.S. Stanford, Ph.D. Dartmouth). Earlier in his career, Johan carried out research on the geology of northern South America and the Caribbean. More recently, his research focus has been the accumulation of combustion pollutants in seasonal snowpack on Mount Washington, New Hampshire (which still holds the world record for the highest wind speed on land at 231 mph!).

Over time, Johan grew to love sharing his science experience through teaching at the high school and college level, plus leading field-based trips focused on geology, hiking, rock and ice climbing, canoeing, orienteering, and more.

Johan and his wife, Tricia, spent the past several years in Maine, living on an island where they raised their daughter. Together, they spend a lot of time outdoors. As a marathon trail runner and marathon nordic skier, Johan enjoys access to the woods and mountains in all seasons. Alpine skiing is a favorite recreational activity. Good fortune and a long-term plan to be in southwestern Montana came together in 2022!
