ABOUT MOSS

Our Mission

Montana Outdoor Science School (MOSS) inspires curiosity, awareness, and understanding of nature and science through quality educational experiences. We engage people through exploration and learning, and prepare students to care for the environment.

Our Vision

MOSS envisions a future where Montanans have a strong connection with nature, understand and value the natural sciences, and are inspired to care for this extraordinary place we call home.

Our Gratitude

In the spirit of healing, we would like to acknowledge that our ability to engage with the environment hinges on the stewardship of Indigenous people across the landscapes we explore. As educators on these lands, it is our responsibility to work to understand this history and help our students as well. We would like to acknowledge the land our feet rest on as belonging to and being used today by peoples including the Apsaalooké (Crow), Salish Kootenai (Flathead), Cheyenne and many more.

Our History

In 1994, three scientists and educators created a summer camp with the simple goal of creating fun, hands-on nature experiences for kids. The MOSS founders shared a vision that our lives are enriched when we have a greater understanding of our natural surroundings.

Today, MOSS operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves more than 6,000 students each year through year-round courses for all ages and backgrounds including outreach programs to 44 schools; 11 weeks of summer camps for over 1,000 students, and free family festivals that celebrate our natural resources. Donations made to MOSS are tax-deductible to the extent of the law.

Outside Kind Pledge

MOSS recognizes our responsibility in ethical use and care of the open spaces and wild landscapes that we explore, educate, and live in. We have taken the pledge to to serve as Outside Kind Ambassadors, following, demonstrating and promoting best practices, principles and tips for enjoying the wild places through our outdoor education programs.
