Montana Outdoor Science School Has a Forever Home at Crosscut!

But we need your help to make it welcoming for EVERYONE!

Celebrating 30 Years of Inspiring Nature and Science Education

For three decades, Montana Outdoor Science School (MOSS) has nurtured a love for nature and science in learners of all ages. Through meaningful educational experiences, we’ve galvanized newcomers to fifth-generation Montanans to explore the vibrant natural wonders of our region, fostering a lifelong passion for caring for this extraordinary place we call home.

We are proud of the impact we’ve had over the past 30 years—sparking curiosity, building confidence, and cultivating stewardship in our families. But we’re not pausing to rest on our accomplishments. Looking forward, MOSS is ready to embrace an exciting future of expanded access, enhanced programs, and broader reach. Together with you, we can ensure every child has the opportunity to experience the transformative power of outdoor education.

Why This Matters

The evidence is clear: time spent in nature as a child fosters a lasting appreciation for the natural world, a healthier lifestyle, and a stronger sense of responsibility for protecting our planet. Over the past 30 years, MOSS has shaped two generations of nature lovers, environmental advocates, and outdoor enthusiasts. Now, we have the opportunity to reach even more young minds.

Our goal is to raise $250,000 to bring outdoor education to 10,000 kids annually through summer camps, school field trips, homeschool programs, and community outreach. By doubling the impact of MOSS and Crosscut’s combined efforts, we can ensure that thousands of children experience the wonder of nature firsthand well into the future.

Your Support Makes This Vision a Reality

Here’s how your contribution will help:

Affordable Access and Scholarships – $100,000

Rising costs shouldn’t prevent kids from exploring the outdoors. Your gift will keep tuition and fees affordable while providing scholarships to families in need, ensuring every child has access to our programs.

Improved Facilities – $100,000

As we settle into our new home at Crosscut, we need an indoor shelter for campers, so they’re safe and comfortable—even during Montana’s unpredictable weather. We will include 2 ADA bathrooms in the barn-style building. We are splitting the cost with Crosscut who will use the facility in the winter for school programs and events.

Streamlined Operations – $50,000

By investing in shared resources like accounting, HR, IT, and instructor training and eliminating duplication of systems, we’ll save nearly $1 million over the next five years, ensuring long-term sustainability and allowing us to focus more resources on serving our community.
