MOSS Homeschool Programs offer enriching, science-based experiences for homeschool families seeking dynamic outdoor education. Designed for learners grades K-6, our programs blend inquiry-based exploration with environmental science, fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and a deep connection to the natural world. Classes are led by professional outdoor educators and include seasonal themes, field investigations, and collaborative projects — all while building community among local homeschooling families.

2026 Fall Homeschool Program

We are offering two days of homeschool programming for K-6th graders. Each session will meet once a week for 8 weeks. The Tuesday and Wednesday sessions will each focus on a different theme, sign up for both and receive a discount on the second session. Scholarships are available, apply below by August 14th.

SESSION 1 – Reading the Landscape: Observation, Identification, & Trail Skills
Tuesdays, September 8th - October 27th

Join MOSS for a deep dive into wilderness skills and reading the landscape. Through field trips, hands-on science, and outdoor exploration, students will gain confidence in outdoor skills including observation, trail safety, and identifying plant and animal signs. What is the fire triangle? What species might we share the trail with? What do animals and people need to survive the elements? The group will answer these questions and more throughout the 8-week session. Students will get a chance to present their newfound knowledge at a family project presentation at the end of the program.

SESSION 2 – Watershed Discovery
Wednesdays, September 9th - October 28th

Explore the natural science of our local landscape while learning about the many elements of the Gallatin River Watershed. Through field trips, hands-on science, and outdoor exploration, we will get to know the plants and animals in our ecosystem, the importance of snow and water to people, and what happens during seasonal transitions. Students will get a chance to become experts on a watershed topic of their choosing and present their findings to friends and family at the end of the 8-week session.

    Length: 8 weeks

    Time: 9:00am drop-off at Story Mill Park; 3:00pm pick-up at Story Mill Park. Transportation in MOSS vans is provided. Drop-off at Crosscut available upon request.

    Location: Crosscut Mountain Sports Center and field trips

    Ages: Grades K-6

    Cost:

    • Reading the Landscape: $450 per session + $5.20 registration fee/ participant

    • Watershed Discovery: $450 per session + $5.20 registration fee/ participant

  • During Registration

    • Enter your child’s grade for the 2026-27 school year.

    • Spots will be held for 15 minutes while you complete registration & payment.

    • If a program is full, join the waitlist. Additional sessions may be added depending on demand and capacity.

    After Registration

    • Immediately following registration, you will receive a confirmation email from ACTIVE.

    • If you are on a waitlist, check your email frequently! When a camp spot opens, you will have 48 hours to register.

    • If you need to cancel a program reservation, this can be done through your online ACTIVE account. See Cancellation & Refund Policies below.

    • Before the start of the program, you will receive an email with additional information from the Program Director.

    • For cancellations made up to 15 days prior to the program start date, tuition will be refunded minus a $50 registration fee. The ACTIVE registration fee ($5.20) is non-refundable.

    • Cancellations made 14 days or fewer before the program start date will not be refunded.

    • Refunds will not be issued for no-shows once a program has started.

    • Cancellations can be made through your ACTIVE account.

  • Payment Plans: The process to set up a payment plan is integrated into registration process in ACTIVE.

    Scholarships: You may review our scholarship policy here and apply for a scholarship here. Scholarship applications are due by August 14, 2026 at 11:59pm. Reach out to us at education@outdoorscience.org if you have any questions.

    Discounts: Public Service Professionals in Gallatin and Park counties are eligible for a 10% discount on MOSS camps. Please see the list of eligible professions below and enter your job description during the registration process.

    • Healthcare workers

    • Educators and staff of Pre-K – 12th grade schools in Gallatin and Park counties

    • First responders (law enforcement, firefighters, SAR, EMT)

    • Active military personnel

    Access to this discount is integrated into the registration process in ACTIVE.

  • Your child is in great hands at MOSS. Our instructors are known for their exceptional love of nature, knowledge, and compassion. Our team has extensive experience in science and environmental education, as well as the terrain and ecosystems of southwestern Montana. All staff members are certified in First-Aid and CPR, and many are certified Wilderness First Responders. Each instructor goes through extensive training, including sessions in risk management, health protocols, science concepts, teaching strategies, and much more. Above all, MOSS instructors bring their passions for nature and learning to inspire curiosity, exploration, and a love for the place we live in.
